1. The ban on smoking in the workplace. This means all shops, reataurants, and even the pubs are smoke free. It's awesome. It means we can take our 8 month old Silas into the pubs with us. Not that we are out pub hopping all night every night with a baby in tow, but when we want to have a pint and some chips we can all go out together. And kids are allowed in the pubs until 9, and even then there is some flexibility.
2. Electric showers. My husband hates these because the water pressure is about 80% of our U.S. shower. But, because the water is heated on demand, you never run out of hot water. Not that I have lots of time for long luxurious showers these days. We can take showers one after another without even thinking about having to hurry, or not making the water quite as hot as you mght like it.
3. Guiness.
I don't know what else to say. It's delicious. It's cold, it's creamy, it's a meal in itself.
4. Recycling. They'll take nearly everything, plastic, glass, paper, metal. They pick it up. And it's single sort. The trash system is pay as you use- so you have to buy tags for 80 cents per bag- which encourages everyone to recycle and be thoughtful in the amount of waste they produce.
5. City planning. I think this is probably true of all of Europe. But you can actually walk into town to do your shopping. You don't have to drive to the middle of no where to a shopping mall to find a clothing store. The banks aren't on some interstate overpass. Everything is right where you need it: in the town centre.
